Exploring the Role of Green Theology in Building Environmental Awareness Among Students at Adiwiyata Madrasah

The purpose of this research is to explore how the implementation of Green Theology can foster environmental awareness among students at MIN 1 Sukoharjo as an Adiwiyata Madrasah. The research subjects include the madrasah principal, Islamic Education (PAI) teachers, and students, who were selected using purposive sampling. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a case research method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation analysis over a three-month period from September to November 2025. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model by applying triangulation of sources, methods, and theories to ensure the credibility of the findings. The results of the research indicate that Green Theology is an effective theological foundation for instilling ecological awareness in students through the integration of religious values and ecological practices. The visionary leadership of the madrasah principal is an important factor in building a religious-ecological school culture, while Islamic Education teachers strengthen ecological character through reflective, contextual learning and role modeling. Through routine programs such as waste banks, 3R, Clean Friday, and school greening, students experience a process of internalizing values that change their behavior from mere compliance to spiritual consciousness. This research contributes to the theory that Islamic theology-based environmental education is capable of developing a holistic Islamic eco-pedagogy model that combines knowledge, character, and spirituality. Practically, these findings offer the idea of a Green Theology in Practice model, which can be developed into a thematic curriculum, ecotheology-based Islamic Education (PAI) modules, and the P5 Merdeka Curriculum project. This research confirms that Green Theology has the potential to become a sustainable Islamic education approach that is relevant in responding to the challenges of the climate crisis and the ecological character building of the younger generation.
